Corrosion Sentries
This page is a work in progress. Corrosion sentries [10] and [12] will be updated soon.
Overview
- The purpose of this page is to assist any players that are missing a Corrosion Sentry on their Cursed Wheel
- It is a mechanic that is not explained well in the game, but is critical to progression
- Directly impacts getting the Abyss's multiple endings and access to the Bounty (Rank 12) Cyclops
- The "true" version of the GWO can only be fought when at 0 corrosion (all 13 Corrosion Sentries registered)
Mechanics
Corrosion
- Corrosion is a central mechanic of this Abyss, with major changes depending on the level of corrosion.
- Corrosion is increased when your party enters the sight area of a Corrosion Sentry.
- Corrosion cannot be decreased whilst in the Abyss, but can be changed by modifying Causality in the Cursed Wheel.
Corrosion Effects
- Fortress Appearance: Slime becomes more prominent with high Corruption.
- Quest Availability: Some quest-lines become unavailable as essential NPCs are driven insane or die as a result of high corrosion. This affects which endings are available.
- Monsters: Different monsters spawn, with stronger monsters at lower corrosion.
- Greater Warped One: The Greater Warped One is much stronger at lower corrosion, gaining new abilities and increased damage and health.
Corrosion Sentries
- There are a total of 13 corrosion sentries
- Appear as stationary flying enemies
- Stepping into their field-of-vision will sound an alarm, the Abyss corrosion level will increase, and they will disappear
- Stepping into their field-of-vision will count as a "Spotted" flag in the Cursed Wheel
- Corrosion sentries are not the same thing as standard floor sentries that are simply powered-up normal enemies
Golems
- Golems walk forwards when activated, destroying traps, damaged walls, and sentries in their path until they reach a solid wall or door.
- Golems are only available after reaching Zone 10 on a first run and acquiring the golem reversal power before fighting the Greater Warped One
Corrosion Sentry Registration
To register a corrosion sentry in the Cursed Wheel the following must be true:
- "Spotted" at least once
- "Not spotted" at least once
- Started at a Cursed Wheel node before encountering the corrosion sentry on the normal progression route and made it to the next Cursed Wheel node without exiting, wheeling, or "accepting death"
"Spotted" and "Not Spotted" Flags
The "Spotted" and "Not spotted" designations are hidden flags the game tracks. However, it only seems to "register" or "save" the flags after reaching the next Cursed Wheel node along the normal progression route.
Flag definitions
- "Spotted" Flag: Entering into a corrosion sentry's line-of-sight
- "Not Spotted" Flag: Moving past a corrosion sentry without entering its line-of-sight. Requires the golem reversal power
- For each corrosion sentry both flags must be registered for it to appear in the Cursed Wheel
During a first run you will be automatically "Spotted" by every corrosion sentry in order to progress. A small number of corrosion sentries are located in areas that cannot be accessed until the overall Abyss corrosion level is lowered. The golem reveral power can be used to block a corrosion sentry's line-of-sight or crush them outright. Note that normal sentries have no effect on flags, registration, or the Abyss corruption level.
Start and Register Nodes
As part of the registration process the correct pair of Cursed Wheel nodes must be used.
- "Start" node: The node you wheel to first at the beginning of the process. The game requires a fresh encounter with the corrosion sentry for its flags to update
- "Register" node: The ending node where the game will update any flags. It is also the node that the corrosion sentry is listed under when it becomes available in the Cursed Wheel. Note that you can never register a corrosion sentry by wheeling to its own node as the starting point
Summary
- Each corrosion sentry requires a separate run (Start node > Register node) for each flag ("Spotted" and "Not spotted")
- Once both flags are registered correctly the corrosion sentry will appear in the Cursed Wheel
- Corrosion sentries in the Cursed Wheel can be toggled ("Spotted" or "Not spotted") to manipulate the overall Abyss corrosion level
It is common to be missing a few corrosion sentries in the Cursed Wheel even after completing the "Blackmail" or "Mastermind" endings. Fighting the Greater Warped one at 0 corrosion on the "Mastermind" ending requires all 13 corrosion sentries be registered and set to "Not spotted". This is only important for the achievement ("Guardian of Guarda") and access to the Rank 12 Cyclops bounty, Master Ring, and [x] in the Bounty Exchange.
Corrosion Sentry Guide
What's covered in the guide?
- Locations of all 13 corrosion sentries
- Pathing instructions for confusing areas. All map directions are based on the floor map
- Golem power reversal directions
- Registration nodes and directions for "Spotted" and "Not spotted" runs
- Important time-saving tips, warnings, and other notes
- Picture of the Cursed Wheel entry
A few of the Cursed Wheel nodes have more than one corrosion sentry. These corrosion sentries have an additional prefix ("2F North" Corrosion Sentry) to distinguish them from each other. The guide is structured as a series of nested drop-down menus that can be kept open or collapsed. Each entry has a [#] that follows the order of appearance in the Cursed Wheel.

Critical Bug
- "Corrosion sentries [10] and [12] cannot be registered properly at the Zone 10 Fountain ("Fortress 3rd Floor Arrival
- To register you need to start at the Zone 9 Harken ("Fortress 2F Minor Harken") and in one full run defeat GWO 6 ("Blackmail" ending) or GWO 8 ("Blackmail" ending) since their registration node is "Triumphant Return"
- Easiest way to do this is on your final run as long as you do not encounter either of them on the way to the GWO fight ("Not spotted")
Time-saving tip
- Corrosion sentries [10]-[13] are the most time-intensive to register
- Corrosion sentries [10] and [12] are not accessible on a first run and are tied to requests related to the endings:
- Corrosion sentry [10]: Search for the Missing Girl
- Corrosion sentry [12]: Blackmail Resolution
- This means that you will have to do a complete run (Start node > Register node) for both flags. It is recommended to continue to the Zone 10 Fountain after being "Spotted" the first time
- For corrosion sentries [11] and [13] you will be "Spotted" on a first run. You can include their "No spotted" runs when registering corrosion sentry [10] and/or [12]
